It is used by log building trade schools throughout the world, but is written for people who want to build or help-build their own log home. My book clearly explains what you need to do to build the walls and roof of scribe-fit log homes.

The State-of-the-Art

I just finished reading this book, and I have to say that it is head-and-shoulders above every other log home construction book I've read. The illustrations are superb, and the tone of the text is very objective and factual. In contrast to books with the "this is how I've been building log homes for XXX years" attitude, Chambers' approach is "I didn't invent it, but so far this is the best way I've found to do this particular task. If I find somebody else doing it a better way in the future I'll start doing it that way." Chambers not only isn't afraid of not-invented-here ideas, he positively embraces them! There is even a chapter on the structural engineering of log trusses, written by a structural engineer (fancy that).

Chambers also covers the subject comprehensively, from the highest-level ideas (his chapter on settling is fascinating) to the lower-level details (proper chainsaw stance for cutting the lateral groove, for instance).

Let me contrast this a bit with Mackie's "Owner-Built Log Home". Mackie's book is a good read, because he's a terrific wordsmith and he really conveys the pleasure of building your own log home. But his illustrations aren't nearly as clear as Chambers', and he tends to write for an audience that already understands a lot of wood joinery terminology and procedures. "Then we did this, and this, and this," and I'm like, "whoa, did you skip a few steps there?" I often found myself re-reading a page several times because I just couldn't envision what he was doing in my mind's eye. Chambers never leaves you wondering.

I think both books have a place on your bookshelf, but if you really want to learn the most hands-on information in a single book, this is the one.

This is an excellent "Manual". Most all the info you need if you want to build a hand scribed round log cabin,but no color pictures. If your looking for technical building info this is your book. I bought almost every book available on log homes building and I wouldn't be with out this if you plan to build one yourself. Not much on house plans or pic's though.

Got this for one recipe

This book is fun. but I really got this only becuz I saw the bride and groom cookies and wanted to make them. Consequently, I didn't use those but made the cookies with the flower basket (weaving the fondant etc) and that turned out beautifully. Good ideas for reference.

I was very much looking forward to receiving this book, but was generally disappointed with it. I agree with the reviewer who said the cover was the best part. Many of the cookie decorations were mundane and rather unprofessional looking. This book didn't offer anything innovative or new.

This truly a calendar that goes above and beyond--in fact it's more art than calendar. Be aware, it is not a "grid" calendar like your usual calendar--day numbers are listed in a long line at the bottom of the picture for each month, allowing the photos to be framed without the classic calendar grid getting in the way.

I am more than happy with this purchase. Beautiful--I bought it to supplement/encourage my resolution to practice yoga everyday this year and it has certainly been inspirational so far.

Quintessential guide for those going through a difficult time!

I have been waiting weeks for the release of this book, and I finally received it! I went through a tough breakup a few weeks ago, and was searching for some insight to help bring myself back into the world. Love Hurts wasn't available yet so I pre-ordered it. In the meantime, I read another helpful work by Lodro Rinzler and Meggan Watterson, entitled "How to Love Yourself (and sometimes other people): Spiritual Advice for Modern Relationships". I really appreciated the insight and it really did help to lift my spirits. Lodro Rinzler really has a way of relating to people in a way that is both empathetic and compassionate. Though he is very learned, his writing doesn't feel like a teacher speaking to a student, it's more like a friend telling you "I've been there before, and you are going to be okay".

Love Hurts: Buddhist Advice for the Heartbroken is no exception. A few of my close friends really helped get me through this really hard time, and gave me unconditional support, love, and advice. I received Love Hurts after most of the breakup process, but that fact doesn't diminish the impact it has had on me. I found myself crying (some from sadness, but mostly joy) and really connecting with this book. "Love Hurts" feels exactly like the friends that have helped me through. It is truly one of the most helpful books I have read in my life. This book covers all of the bases during the breakup process. It contains a load of good advice for self-care and has pretty much everything you need to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. This is the quintessential book for anyone going through a heartbreaking loss, or even just a tough time. It is written in a way that is not overwhelming, and even the size is smaller, and it is perfectly suited for someone who just needs love and the confidence to find answers from within. I have learned a lot and gained a lot of comfort from Lodro Rinzler's works, and I recommend all of them highly.

Love Hurts is a beautiful handbook for the heart written with genuine concern in the spirit of companionship. While it is a book full of sound advice for the brokenhearted, it is also a precious gift of love to all of us from someone who truly gives a damn about our world. I cherish this book because it is a small sure voice of sanity and kindness in an uncertain time so full of madness and suffering. Love Hurts is a must-have for the bookshelf, but it’s small enough for coat pocket (for the times you really need it close by). It would be a good idea to have several copies that can be given to friends/family during times of loss -- the gift would show them they are not alone and the advice might save a life.

Interesting compilation for kids

My sister and I are in our mid and late 50's and still repeat some of the oddball things in this book that contains a compilation of kids' sayings and sing-song poetry. We were little - 8 and 4 years old - and still remember the book to this day. I was happy to find it!

Remarkable collection of photographs

Written by Kurt Titze, a German, this book includes a large number of dramatic photographs taken by the author. He has visited quite of few of the remote Jain pilgrimage sites that most Jains will not have a chance to visit. It contains very well researched description of all the sites covered.
This is quite an unusual book. Strongly recommended for personal Jain libraries, although it is a fairly expensive book.
Interwoven with the articles on Jain pilgrimage centers, the basic principles of Jainism, specially non-violence, are highlighted.

I agree with the author that Mahavira is the eldest son of not only India but of the Universe. Ahimsa - Dyanamic Non-Violence is the only answer for universal brotherhood. the Ahimsa the anekantwad & the aparigrah - the Jain trinity will save the planet & protect it from pollution.

Good Resource

I have been preparing for this exam on my own for several weeks now, using online resources. I scheduled the exam and then realized that this book was released yesterday (my exam was today). I purchased the kindle version and read through as much as I could, focusing on the chapters that I had the least experience with. I passed the exam without being able to completely read or do any of the practice questions, which I have done on previous exams. I would recommend utilizing the practice questions and activities in the book.

This book seemed to be an excellent resource for studying for this exam but is not all inclusive. I would start with this book and then expand your studying with resources online.

Not meant to be used alone

I delayed my review of the book until I took the 70-486 exam. I just took the exam, passed, and feel strongly that I could not have done it without the help of this book serving as a guide. I also believe that I would not have passed if I had relied solely on this book. I used this book in conjunction with Pro ASP.NET 4 from Apress and also supplemented with Pluralsight videos to fill in gaps with how things worked together.

Exam Ref 70-486: Developing ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Applications by William Penberthy (Microsoft Press)

This book covers the objectives for the Microsoft 70-486: Development ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Applications certification. Books like this can be difficult to review, particularly if you don't plan to take the exam so you have nothing against which to measure the criteria. However, as the author points out "...this book takes a high-level approach, building on your knowledge of lower-level web application development and extending it into application design."

Like most Microsoft Exam Ref books, this one broke core objectives directly from the exam into chapters. The first chapter focused on the objectives 1.1 to 1.7, which is centered on the design of MVC 4 applications. Much of this text surrounded the theoretical and practical design of an application, and didn't go into any details on using MVC 4.

Chapter 2 covers objectives 2.1 to 2.5, focusing on designing the user experience. This included coverage of CSS, HTML, JavaScript in DOM manipulation, AJAX, layout and cross-browser compatibility techniques. I found parts of this chapter very helpful in practical, every day web development and some of the standards and techniques applied are applicable to all facets of web development, not just necessarily within MVC 4.

Mr. Penberthy then tackles the objectives 3.1 to 3.6, which cover topics in developing the user experience. The information within this chapter I found to be much more pragmatic than the previous chapter covering design. Topics included SEO optimization, semantic markup, globalization, and using models, views and controllers together to control application binding and behaviors. The last objective covers bundling, minification and data compression.

Next came objectives 4.1 to 4.4 on testing, debugging and deployment scenarios. There's also an objective covering debugging Windows Azure applications.

The last chapter (objectives 5.1 to 5.5) included coverage on topics related to designing and implementing security. Like chapter 3, the information here was pragmatic with more demonstrations of working inside of IIS and implementing code within the various authentication providers.

The biggest pro in the book for me seemed to be the objective review provided at the end of each objective, which helps reinforce the content and act as a moderate benchmark for self-testing.

If you're looking for a straight-forward, succinct guide to accomplishing exam objectives my opinion is this book will probably help you understand the basic design and development exam objectives for the MVC 4 framework. However, I've found no single book can prepare you for a Microsoft certification exam, and this book is no exception. You should use other adjunct materials, and you will need to have some experience developing web applications and using the MVC Framework. This book is not for novice developers or web developers who are trying to learn MVC from the ground up.

Only a few of these poems touched my heart

The first poem of this little book touched my heart so, thinking that the rest of the poems would also speak to me, I purchased the book. Now, I must say that poems are like little fingers pointing to thoughts or feelings that may or may not relate to who you are and where you are going; thus this compilation may touch someone else where, for the most part, it by-passed me.
