Liana Lowenstein, MSW, is an author, sought-after speaker, and practitioner with over 22 years of specialized work with children, adolescents and families. She provides clinical supervision to mental health practitioners and consults to several mental health agencies. She has a reputation as a dynamic workshop leader and has presented trainings across North America and abroad. She is a Certified Child Psychotherapist-Supervisor and she serves on the board of the Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy (CACPT). She is founder of Champion Press Publishing Company and has authored or edited numerous publications including the highly-acclaimed books, Paper Dolls & Paper Airplanes: Therapeutic Exercises for Sexually Traumatized Children (with Crisci & Lay, 1997), Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth (1999), More Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth (2002), Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce (2006), and Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children (2006), Assessment and Treatment Activities for Children, Adolescents, and Families: Practitioners Share Their Most Effective Techniques (Volume One published in 2008, Volume Two published in 2010) and Creative Family Therapy Techniques (2010). A Wonderful Resource

This book is perfect for anyone working with at-risk children and adolescents. As a child therapist, I found that the activities helped to engage even children who are highly reluctant to engage in therapy. There are a wide variety of activities in the book that range in age from preschool to teenager and address just about every treatment issue you could think of. Most important, the activities are fun for the kids while also being therapeutic. I would highly recommend this book-- it's worth every penny.

Immediately put to use!

This is a book that a therapist can put to use immediately. It is extemely well-organized:
-chapters divided by topics
-a chart indicating activities for each stage of therapy, modality and age
-clear directions included with each activity
Many of the pages are reproducible, and most of the activities require materials that are easy to find. Best of all, the activities are clearly therapeutic!
My only complaint (and it's minor so I'm not removing any stars) is that several activities involve candy. Since I work with elementary students in a district that has implemented the federal nutrition guidelines, I cannot give students candy nor can I give any food as a reward. Some of those activities can be "tweaked" so that I give stickers instead. However, that's a very minor point, and overall, the book is a fabulous resource!
Don't miss Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes, a similar book co-authored by Lowenstein, that contains extensive activities for pre-schoolers, elementary children and teens who have been sexually abused.

Another Great Book!

This book and the prequel "Creative Interventions" are the two most used books are my bookshelf! The activities are child friendly, fun and engaging. The book is well organized and user friendly. This book is a must have for any working with children. I highly recommend it!
