Great buy.

I am taking a course on coding and this book is required. Great book. Tons of helpful hints, color coded information, etc. Be sure to get the Expert for Physicians edition. It is well worth it. And if you are taking a course, this is a great book to own, not borrow. You will need it to take the test and get certified, and they recommend you get very familiar with your personal coding book.

i thought this book was wonderful, one of the most fun additions to my gardening library in years. while i agree with the other reviewer that the writing is of a completely different style than most gardening books - it is very stream-of-consciousness and conversational - to me those were features, not bugs. i thoroughly enjoyed the discussions of the plants selected for this book, because they are all plants that i've been wanting to learn more about or to add to my garden but haven't seen this kind of dedication to their praises and attributes before. really, my only complaint is that it would have been great to have even more photographs of combinations and in-situ plant setups, but, hey, that is why there is pinterest.

Full of fresh and exciting planting ideas, especially for the colder zones

As an Iowa gardener, I was excited to see that Kelly Norris has published a new gardening book, “Plants with Style.” I greatly admired his book about irises that was published several years ago, I was happy to hear that he had been appointed as horticultural manager of the excitingly revitalized Des Moines Botanical Garden, and I heard him speak last year in Cedar Rapids (he was an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker).

Norris is a well-informed and enthusiastic gardener, and his new book reflects his extensive experience (even though he is a gardener only in his late 20s) as well as his boundless enthusiasm for plants and garden design. “Plants with Style” reads like an informal garden tour with a fervent young plant geek (he refers to himself as such), urging us to try our luck with the numerous new and unusual plants that he has run across in his career as a gardener and in his visits to numerous gardens of other plant enthusiasts. (Note: One of Norris’ goals is to make gardening more appealing to younger people, and sometimes his language can be conspicuously trendy, although he does tone down the hip-speak by the middle of the book).

“Plants with Style” is divided into five chapters: The first emphasizes planting what grows well in your own region – always good advice. The second covers trees, shrubs and structural plants that Norris believes should be more widely planted. Chapter Three mentions less well-known varieties of “emblem plants”: tulips in April, peonies and iris in May, etc., without which a garden misses the glories of the seasons. The fourth chapter covers the attributes that make garden vignettes successful: color, contrast and texture, and shows examples of interesting plants and combinations with these characteristics. And the final chapter discusses unusual plants that can add quirky interest to a garden.

In every chapter, I was pleased to learn about plants or varieties that were unknown to me, and I hope to be able to find some of them as they become more widely distributed – it’s books like this (and magazine articles) that are responsible for generating enough interest in newer plants for garden centers to start carrying them.

Photos are included for most of the plants he mentions, and although I would like to have seen more garden composition photos in the chapter about garden vignettes, the book is about specific recommended plants, not overall garden design, and the plant close-ups are sufficient.

It would have been useful if there had been an appendix with a chart listing the recommended plants, their size, growing conditions, hardiness, etc.

And on the topic of hardiness: One quibble I have is that Norris seems to be trying to appeal to gardeners in all regions of the United States (if such a book of planting recommendations is even possible), even though his own planting experience is limited to what will grow in Iowa. I understand that most garden writers have tried and failed to grow certain plants and still mention them in their books, based on others’ success, but it was still disappointing to me that some of the plants he mentions won’t grow here in the hardiness Zone 5 we share in common. Aren’t there already enough books about what will grow in Oregon? Norris should stick with his strengths and concentrate on what will grow in his own region – just as he advises us in Chapter 1.

But overall I found the book to be useful and full of fresh and exciting ideas – I’m inspired to try some new plants in my garden. I recommend “Planting with Style” to other gardeners who are interested in learning about lesser-known plants, particularly for gardeners in the colder zones of the Midwest and Northeast.

Plants to think about.

A well written book on garden plants. The photos are generally close up and on not on glossy paper, but show the plant reasonably well. No flower borders are shown. I have really enjoyed reading this new book in this New Year 2016, even though we are suffering a heat wave for our summer here in New Zealand.
I can easy recommend it to all gardeners.

Using the latest research based on released archival information and full-color illustrations, this book charts the history of the top scoring pilots of the RoCAF from the beginning of the gruelling, eight-year Sino-Japanese War to the conclusion of the Civil War against the Chinese Communists. Beginning as a ragged and very disparate group of planes and pilots drawn from various provincial air forces, the RoCAF gradually became standardised and was brought under American tutelage. Altogether it produced 17 aces who scored kills while flying a startling variety of aircraft, from biplanes to F-86 Sabres.

About the Author
Raymond Cheung served as a correspondent for a number of well-known defence journals in the United Kingdom, writing mainly on naval matters. However, his 'first love' is research in the history of the Chinese air Force during the Sino-Japanese War 1937-45. In pursuit of this research, he has visited the archives of the Republic of China Air Force (RoCAF) and the Japanese Defence Department on numerous occasions. Some of this research has been published in Chinese publications. This is his first work on the subject in English.

Excellent Summary of China's Aces!

Osprey's AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES series has seen some fine history but, now and then, they turn out a real gem. Case in point: Raymond Cheung's ACES OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA AIR FORCE. Previously, information on RoC aces has been fragmentary and hard to find, especially for post-1950 pilots. Cheung's book, #126 in the Osprey series, shines a comprehensive and illuminating light on all the aces China has produced over the decades.

Cheung highlights the various Chinese aces in chapters on early air units of the various provinces, the 1937 Shanghai/Nanking campaigns, the Sin-Soviet Pact, Chinese-American aces, etc. The life and combat exploits of such pilots as Kao, Chi-hang; Liu, Tsui-kang; Loh, Ying-teh; 'Art' Chin; Kao, You-hsin; and Leng, Pei-shu are entertainingly detailed .

The book is illustrated with many rare b&w photographs and wonderful color profiles by Chris Davey. Davey's profiles are quite an interesting smorgasbord of types including Curtiss Hawks, Boeing 281s, CR 32s, I-16s, P-40s, P-43s, P-51s and F-86s!

All in all, ACES OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA AIR FORCE is a great book on a previously-little known subject. Highly recommended.

The proud history of Chinese aces and their detailed air battles

The colorful history of the ROCs gallant aviators, the development of the ROCAF and their struggle against a modern Japanese Air Force. The book meticulously details air battles from the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression through World War II. It's a piece of history that is not widely known in the West but Raymond Cheung does an incredible job of retelling the story of China's 17 fighter aces. Extremely well researched, rare photographs, great artwork and a must read! You won't find a better resource in the States.

Needs more photo documentation and maps ... but it was a good read.

This work could have benefited from more photographs to demonstrate the aircraft described in the text along with some maps to show where the action was taking place. Having traveled to China and learned what a large place it is, I can say that this is necessary for most folks not born in China. I learned quite a lot about the time and the military unit despite all these flaws.

I’ve been a fan of Meg Cabot for YEARS now and entirely because of the Heather Wells series. This was one of the series that got me back into reading when I was in my reading slump so I owe my sister a big thanks for letting me borrow these books way back in the day! I actually don’t read a lot of adult fiction anymore since I’m busy reading ALL THE YA BOOKS so it was really nice to fall back into some chick lit and a touch of mystery with the latest Heather Wells book.

While I haven’t actually started my wedding planning yet, I felt like I could relate to Heather a little bit with her crazy wedding plans! (This may also be the point I realized that I might actually start to enjoy adult lit more than I used to because I’ve actually been through some LIFE THINGS now haha!) Heather always has a lot on her plate, but I love how much she really cares about the kids in her dorm. When everything else is going wrong, she’s always got their best interests at heart, sometimes even over her own personal issues.

One thing I’ve always loved about Meg Cabot is the amount of humor in her books. Each chapter starts with a funny little collection of song lyrics, written by Heather, and in this book, they’re all about her crazy wedding plans. I think it helps the reader not take the book too seriously because there are darker subjects because hi, it’s a murder mystery — Except you almost don’t feel like classifying it as that because the tone IS so light. I definitely had another good group of laugh out loud moments at both characters and funny situations!

Then of course, there’s Cooper. I am SO HAPPY for Heather Wells! I’ve been reading this series for YEARS so I’m so happy that she gets her dream guy (and he’s dreamy too)! I’ve always loved their romance and their relationship is just so natural. Somehow I forgot how funny Cooper is too! I always felt like he was more serious… Which I guess he is, but he and Heather have some seriously hilarious conversations.

It’s actually kind of hard to review this book because overall, it was just a nice, quick, and easy read. Sure, the plot was exciting and interesting but the Heather Wells series has just become a “fun” read for me and as much as Heather’s personal life changes, it’s the standard go-to mystery. It’s definitely for a light reading kind of mood and if you’re a fan of the series, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

The end we all wanted

An entirely satisfying end for the Heather Wells series. After years of drama surrounding her love life and work life, things seem to be all set for Heather: her wedding is weeks away, and "Death Dorm" has undergone a makeover and is now the most popular dorm on campus. Though the latter may be more due to a special down resident than to the amenities of housing.

But, in good literary fashion, we're not far in before every wrench is thrown into the machine: another student is dead, half of the dorm staff is fired, and Heather finds that there's a lot of RSVPs that she didn't expect. Because she never invited them. Including her mother, whom absconded with all of Heather's pop-icon fortune years before.

This book preserves the humor and simmering sexiness of the previous books, coming to a satisfying conclusion. Maybe "Death Dorm" will never be "Totally Alive 100% No Problem Dorm," but you know that whatever happens, Heather Wells can handle it.

Heather Does It Again

Heather Wells should be in the final stages of planning her wedding to private investigator Cooper Cartwright, but the beginning of the semester brings all sorts of problems at Fischer Hall, where she is assistant residence hall director. Moving freshmen in usually involves issues, but when a new student happens to be a prince, there's bound to be trouble. Oh, and one of the resident assistants turns up dead...Yeah, the wedding may have to take a back seat.

Heather is a fun, real character whose antics and thoughts are often enough to make me laugh out loud. The relationship she has with her boyfriend is both sweet and mutually supportive, and her friends all have unique personalities that bring life to the story. There isn't a very deep mystery here; in fact, Heather gets sidetracked early on by a noisy rebellion of some fired resident assistants, as well as the situation with the prince and assorted other issues. And really, the mystery's not the point; Heather's so busy looking forward to her wedding and deciphering the problems that that much alone would be enough. To be honest, the mystery was only of interest to me in seeing how Heather would deal with it.

I'm not sure if this is the final book in the series, but it definitely has the hallmarks of being so; Heather's mother finally makes an appearance, and despite everything, the wedding day approaches with all the technicalities usual to such a date. If it is the last in the series, it's a good one; if not, I'll be more than happy to see where Heather goes next.

About the Author
Dom Hubert van Zeller (1905-1984) lived a life of holy renunciation. He was born in Egypt when that nation was a British protectorate, and entered the Benedictine novitiate

at age nineteen. His soul thirsted for an austere way of life; at one point he even left the Benedictines to enter a strict Carthusian monastery. However, he soon returned to the Benedictines. A talented sculptor as well as a writer, his artworks adorn churches in Britain and the United States. He was a friend of the great Catholic writers Msgr. Ronald Knox and Evelyn Waugh, and is the author of Holiness: A Guide for Beginners, Holiness for Housewives, and Spirit of Penance, Path to God.

Understanding suffering can open the door to your heart

I converted from Lutheran to Catholic when I married 38 years ago. I didn't have much education on the Catholic faith; not like today where you can take about an 8 month class on the fundamentals of the faith (RCIA). I bought this book because I was having such a hard time with some personal issues. I didn't think I could bear anymore and so I searched for a catholic book that could help explain the meaning of suffering. I found it in this book. When I bought it I did not notice that it was written as an explanation for each station of the cross. It is very deep and thought provoking and because it explained the purpose of suffering (as believed by the Catholic faith), it brought great relief to me. Understanding why helped to lift the burden off my shoulders and I was able to move forward with my life. I examined my conscience and went to confession many times. I thought I had a lot of faith, but I don't think the door to my heart was open very wide; maybe just a crack. Now I feel that the door is open a lot wider and finally love can get in instead of my heart being full of so much hate, anger, and resentment. Forgiveness was not practiced in my family and really I had no idea how to forgive someone. The meaning of suffering is not meant to be a negative experience although that is how most of us perceive it. It is meant to bring you closer to God if you understand the meaning of suffering. It is a great book that I will keep to read and reread as a reference book.

Very Helpful

Having suffered a recent painful loss, this book has helped to ground me and to console me when the going is rough. I especially appreciate the humanity of the writing -- it's appeal to humans, as we are not saints. Even the saints were human. The focus throughout is on Jesus Christ and Calvary, and how carrying the crosses of our lives brings us closer to Jesus and aids His spiritual immanence on earth. This is a book to have on hand for consolation and strength after we encounter inevitable pain and losses. It is beautifully written, a cohesive whole, and feels absolutely contemporary yet tinged with the truth of the ages. This book is teaching me to accept and work with my suffering instead of resisting or evading it.

Phenomenal Book

This is a classic that everyone should have! The Catholic doctrine of redemptive suffering is a gem that is still waiting to be fully revealed and understood and this book helps one to enter more fully into that great mystery. I cannot say enough good things about this book and how it will help one grow closer to Christ and his cross! This book isn't to be read but to be prayed!
