Fussy but good early thriller

Late Victorian - actually probably better classified as "Aesthetic/Decadent" - mystery/thriller focusing around a secret society and a strange woman much loved by the populace who's a source of pure evil. The kind of book that is liable to be overrated by a certain type of reader, as it's very interesting historically: it's an early appearance of the "femme fatale", it's an early appearance of the "secret society wreaking havoc" idea, and generally it's just an early appearance of the thriller period. The question, though, is whether or not it's worth reading today. I'd say....sorta. It has its flaws, like a lot of early thrillers it doesn't really cohere well together and is more a collection of related short stories than an actual novel. Meade and Eustace are more concerned with evoking mood, too, than actual storytelling - ultimately the book doesn't really go anywhere, we end the story pretty much where we began. That said, this kind of book has an inherent pleasure to it, we've fallen far from this standard of popular storytelling. It's literate, evocative in some spots, and certainly does move. I wouldn't say a "must read", but you won't hate yourself for reading. Most easily available electronically for free.

women villains

You're really missing something if you haven't tried any of these mystery stories by L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace. Although to get the full flavor of her women villains, you need to find a copy of the Sorceress of the Strand. I believe it's been reprinted, but if not, it should be easy to dig up a used copy of Rivals of Sherlock Holmes edited by Alan (?) Russell. Most of the stories are in that.
These two authors had some delicious ideas about women and crime (the Sorceress of the Strand is a evil beautician, for example).... If you like sultry spies, you might enjoy the flavor of what a demure Edwardian woman could be like when she went over to the dark side....The Sorceress Of The Strand

This book compliments the course featured on Coursera taught by the author Emma Jakoi though I am sure the book would stand a long nicely as well. The content an in depth look at human physiology revealing a deeper understanding of the topic. I would not recommend this book to a complete novice as the material is rather deep. It is a lovely support to the course though.
