This is a fantastic book, one of the best books I have ever read!

In my experience, the trouble with books of this kind is generally that the authors simply do not know enough about the nature of reality and can't write about fundamental causes that have effects on everyday reality. This is not the case here.

The authors start with fundamental causes -- your thinking and how it effects your reality -- and work from there to show you how this effects your assertiveness which they define as a world view, as a definition you have of yourself in the world.

This is powerful!

Usually books of this type are all about effort and trying, and adjusting your behavior on the surface . . . not this book. when you know core causes, everything changes. You have tools that can really change your life.

This should be a best seller!!

I bought a copy for myself, and just reading the first few pages, instantly my approach to people and situations began to change. So I bought a copy for my sister, too, and posted on Facebook.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just people having major difficulties with what they perceive to be assertiveness. This book is about having clarity as to who you are in the world, what you value, and how to live a life that matches your innermost truth.

By the way, the writing is absolutely excellent, as is the book layout.

Jargon free and easy to digest self-help title that delivers

We live in `very negative times', and it is important for people to have the correct skills to manage their interactions with other people and organizations that may not have your interests at heart or necessarily care. I am not saying the world is `battlefield', however, I am sure you get the point I am trying to make.

My thoughts on the book:​

This book is very user-friendly and is relatively `jargon' free, any science that there maybe is expressed in layman's terms. The book begins with defining what it is to be assertive, and what it is not. There some good real life examples, as well as a section that will test your ability to understand and putting into practice what you learned. Each section of the book is in nice manageable `chunks' that are easy to digest, the book flows well with each section complementing the last, while at the same time building up your understanding, this book is highly recommended.

There have been plenty of books written about assertiveness and how to apply it to all sorts of situations but I think this is probably one of the best I've read. It is divided into two sections - the first is about win-win situations, assertive communication and an explanation of what exactly assertive behaviour and communication looks like.

Part two is about applying assertive techniques to a variety of situations both at work and in the home as well as when making purchases or having work done to your home. The whole of the book repays careful study and it will help anyone to analyse their own behaviour to see where they could be making a situation worse because they don't wholly appreciate the difference between aggression and assertiveness.

If you only read one book on assertiveness - make it this one. Putting the techniques into practice could well improve your life significantly.

About the Author
Burdett A. Loomis is a professor of political science at the University of Kansas. He received his Ph.D. form the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1974, served as an American Political Science Congressional Fellow in 1975-1976, and has taught at the University of Kansas since 1979. He has written on a variety of topics, including Congress, interest groups, state legislatures, and public policy. In 1984, Loomis directed the Congressional Management Project, which produced the first of many editions of SETTING COURSE: A CONGRESSIONAL MANAGEMENT GUIDE. Aside from teaching courses on congressional politics, interest groups, and policy making, since 1983 Loomis has directed public internship programs in Washington and Topeka. He currently serves as chair of the political science department and Interim Director of the Robert J. Dole Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at the University of Kansas.

Wendy Schiller (Ph.D., University of Rochester) is Associate Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Brown University (Twitter acct @profwschiller). She did her undergraduate work in political science at the University of Chicago, served on the staffs of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Governor Mario Cuomo, and completed Fellowships at the Brookings Institution and Princeton University. At Brown, she teaches popular courses titled The American Presidency, Introduction to the American Political Process, and Congress and Public Policy. Among books she has authored or co-authored are THE CONTEMPORARY CONGRESS (Thomson-Wadsworth) and PARTNERS AND RIVALS: REPRESENTATION IN U.S. SENATE DELEGATIONS (Princeton University Press). She has also published in academic journals, including the American Journal of Political Science, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Studies in American Political Development, and the Journal of Politics. Her most recent book is ELECTING THE SENATE: INDIRECT DEMOCRACY BEFORE THE 17TH AMENDMENT. She is a frequent contributor to major national news outlets and is the political analyst for WJAR10, the local NBC affiliate in Providence, Rhode Island.

About the Author

Paul Pook has worked in high-performance rugby for more than 15 years. A former professional player, Paul was Ireland's national fitness coach and part of Ireland's Grand Slam-winning coaching team. More recently, Paul was appointed head of conditioning for the Russia Rugby Union and prepared the national team for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Paul has a special interest in workload management and player longevity. He recently presented at the RBS Six Nations conference in Venice on the subjects of GPS and optimising player workload and shortly afterward presented at the Italian Olympic Federation in Rome on the subject of athlete longevity. He is currently researching the application of an interactive web portal for optimising performance and preventing injury.

Paul has also founded a unique residential high-performance centre in Southwest France. Catering to ambitious players and coaches, the centre contains the very latest strength and conditioning equipment, which will ensure both individuals and teams achieve their optimal fitness in order to compete at the highest level of sport.

Excellent for any level

I coach a rugby 7's team & I am always looking for new ideas & methods to keep my players fresh & fit. This book gives an excellent overview of the 'how & why' of fitness specific for the game of rugby.
What really made it worthwhile for me was the DVD. The visuals really help to give one an understanding of what the author must believe are the key exercises.
Some of the exercises require equipment ( weights et cetera as well as more specialised stuff ) but even if you do not access to this there are ample ideas & systems to ensure that your players achieve the desired fitness levels.

Decent, basic, life reminders

It's decent. Simple list of ideas, the majority of which are good, basic, simple reminders. Something to play in the car to remind one of what's important. We might not need a CD for this, but if we do, here it is. It is good. I would listen to it now and then. I would not say it is something that I enjoyed enough that I would give it as a gift.

One you will enjoy!

The first few pages, I was getting emotional and saying "no way" are kids grown up, what a twister. I was ready to stop and give this one five stars when I read Sprig's name. When you read the book you will see what I mean. I enjoyed the storyline and new character which could make the family dynamic quite interesting in the future.

There was one 'tough love' scene that surprised the heck out of me. Again, I was talking to my reader saying, "OH NO" but I quickly reminded myself that act was completely indicative of Mick the Tick's character. He's just crazy, a real sexy crazy ticking time bomb! The man really LOVES. Good job with this one Ms. Monroe.

Oh my goodness

Mallory Monroe is one of favorite authors and she didn't disappoint me. All I know is that I can hardly wait for the next one. A lot of twist and turns but it will keeping you guessing on who's the traitor and through it all how has back for the havoc that is about to breakout because with Mick the Tick he doesn't play when it comes his family or the love of his life Roz.

Omg!!!!! Mick and Roz what a combination... These two gave me life from beginning to end. Their love for each other is undeniable.. Yes, he constantly kept saying it but he showed and proved it as well. He's definitely my favorite male character of all the mob series. It's just something about his character thats flawless even with all of his flaws.
And.... Roz that confrontation scene between her and Mick had me on the edge of my seat.. The build up leading up to scene gripping. Roz is no joke and I was afraid for Mick.. Don't want to give anything away but that was too much for my mick....

Also love the addition of the lost sister great touch

Balanced, Biblical Approach to Dating, Marriage, and Sex

The Mingling of Souls: God's Design for Love, Marriage, Sex & Redemption - Matt Chandler with Jared C. Wilson

The scope of this book runs from the beginning to the end of a relationship. Starting with attraction, Chandler works his way through each phase of romantic relationships: attraction, dating, courtship, wedding, sex, fighting, romance, and commitment. It is a holistic look at what a Godly relationship looks like as conveyed through the Song of Solomon. Overall Chandler gives a balanced, Biblical, and practical take on dating, marriage, and beyond.

Highlights

I think one of the most helpful and needed discussions in the book was on the idea of the "one." In the chapter on marriage ("Wedding Bells") Chandler says this:

"I just see no reason to agree with the worldly romantic notion that every person has just one 'soul mate' out there waiting for him or her. In fact, I find that idea to be anticovenantal, contrary to grace... It turns the search for a godly spouse into an audition to be the one who 'completes' you... No spouse can complete you. Don't look for a spouse to do what only Jesus can." (pg 106-107)

He goes on to say that whomever you marry is the "one" for you. This is such a refreshing take on the popular romantic ideal that is so prevalent in our culture, even Christian culture. Chandler doesn't deny the sovereignty of God working in our lives, but denies the pagan idea that someone "completes us." And he emphases the covenantal relationship of marriage by illustrating that the "one" is the one you chose to marry.

Chandler's distinction between dating and courtship is also extremely helpful. The cynicism in me runs deep when it comes to the idea of courtship because of works like "I Kissed Dating Goodbye." The way Chandler deals with it however is quite refreshing. He spells it out this way: dating is the "get to know you" phase of the relationship, and courtship is the "let's head toward marriage" phase of the relationship. Essentially the difference in dating and courting is the intention behind it, not necessarily certain actions. This is helpful because it removes the pressure from dating and the awkwardness from courtship.

Another strong point of the book is the dealing with marriage being a representation of Christ and the Church. I think this so often gets lost in the "romantic love" part of marriage. Christ's commitment to the Church is the same commitment that spouses are to have to one another. The way Christ gave himself up for the Church is the same way a husband is to give himself for his wife, sacrificially. The love that spouses are to have for one another is the love that Christ has for His Church; committed, delighting, faithful love.

Chandler also does a good job of not leave things in the theoretical sphere, but also offers practical advice throughout the book. The strongest section of practical advice is on conflict, or "Fighting Fair" to use his language. He borrows a good portion of it from other authors but it is very practical and Biblical. Honestly the majority of advice he offers could be used in any relationship, not just marriage.

Critiques

The one critique that I can offer is on the chapter about sex. As a whole the chapter was very good. He had great things to say about healthy sex within marriage, but if felt somewhat one sided. It's typical in dealing with sex for authors to focus primarily on males and I was hopeful that Chandler would address both genders equally. While he does address women, the main emphases seems to be directed at men. While he did a better job than most, it still felt a little one sided.

Final Thoughts

As a whole I really enjoyed the book, especially the final chapter, which I found to be the most inspirational. While I am yet to be married, the thought of finishing well in marriage is something that is very appealing. It is something that I know I want to strive to achieve. Chandler gave a great call for all to do so and practical advice for how to do so. I pray that I one day have the opportunity to finish well and am faithful to the end.

Great for pre-marital counseling.

My girlfriend and I read through this book together and discussed it page by page. It was a very helpful book and has super-charged the progress in our relationship. I definitely recommend this as a pre-marital counseling resource. For best results, I recommend that BOTH people read AND discuss this book. Underline the sentences you want to discuss, then get some coffee and talk through it-- maybe a chapter a week. You'll be surprised at how many interesting conversations unfold from doing this.

I LOVED THIS BOOK

I LOVED THIS BOOK. I am a college female who has a hard time holding purity. I am not a virgin, but have repented and moving into a pure until marriage. It is very hard to stay strong when you have already had sex. This book has really helped me to have a better understanding of God's thoughts of sex are. I also loved this book because as I get older I get trapped in the thought of marriage and it freaks me out actually, like the book mentioned there is always this thought in the back of my head with my current boyfriend "am I sure he might be the one" there are billions of people on this earth, how can I know he is the one. I love this book with that. Lastly, this book helped to understand marriage. I had a really difficult time understanding that marriage is not going to be daises and flowers, there are going to be lows, and maybe not little lows but deep deep ones. I love the honesty and the truth in this book. The author Matt has some examples of his imperfection and I love that! I think so many times married couples in church put on the happy face and never discuss to college or high school age students that marriage isn't perfect. I also loved the certain sentence that said "brother, you are going to fight with someone for the rest of your life. Do you want it to be with Lauren?" I always think that marriage is finding that someone who you rarely fight with, who you click and everything is perfect, and he makes it so clear that's not it at all. When he puts it into that perspective. Yes, I do want to be in fights for the rest of my life with the person I am with now. But I would have always said no if I had the process of "we fight a lot, I should find someone who I get a long better with". I greatly recommend this book to young couples before marriage & for couples who have been married for a long time!! Please read, it will really help to rekindle what has been lost and put God on the front page.
