Dr. Jack Purdum - 'C' for the Arduino, A Real Teacher, Learn it from the ground - up ! A tool for the neophyte.

I have currently finished Dr. Jack Purdum's book "Beginning 'C' for Arduino". There's a ton of books out there for learning 'C', but most assume a basic knowledge of programming at some level. This guy assumes NOTHING! If you are a complete neophyte, have no former programming expertise and are willing to pay close attention and invest the time; then this book is for you. This text does not dispense pabulum, rather it builds paragraph upon chapter in an exceedingly well thought out dissertation that even I can follow, albeit with a few re-reads. The concepts are well defined and laid out in a context of real world comparison that really helps things make sense. Many of these concepts are very foreign to the neophyte, but Jack compares them to things we understand and drives the concepts home. Often times he uses some levity, which under the cloud of frustration, is most welcomed. There have been times reading this book that I felt that I just couldn't continue because I didn't have the gray matter needed. I went back, re-read, re-did the sketches and finally saw the light. It just takes perseverance. 'C' is no picnic when you are trying to learn it from scratch. There is, in my prevue, no better teacher than Dr. Jack Purdum when it comes to teaching not only the basics, but giving you, with effort, the tools to accomplish your mission. This Prof. Rocks ! With a bit of review, I can now actually WRITE some fundamental code that actually works, first time through the compiler. Dr. Jack isn't just an academic in an ivory tower at some university, he's a real world teacher that truly understands how to get some very difficult concepts across and make them stick ! Please look at some of the preface offered as a preview to the book.

I have a tendency to write reviews for very good stuff or the very bad stuff. Rarely anything in between. This book was one that I was going to skip reviewing but the more I got into it the more value I found. The author has a somewhat "professorial" style that can be somewhat off-putting. If he irritates you try to ignore it, he has probably earned the right to have a high opinion off himself. In terms of his substance and content...it is excellent. Charting the various shifts in public policy which first facilitated the entry of major corporations into the cultural sphere, it analyses the roles of governments in injecting the principles of the free market into public arts agencies—in particular the Arts Council in Great Britain and the National Endowment for the Arts in the USA. It goes on to study the corporate take-over of art museums, highlighting the ways in which ‘cultural capital’ can be garnered by various social and business ‘elites’ through commercial involvement in the arts, and shows how corporations have succeeded in integrating themselves into the infrastructure of the art world itself by showcasing contemporary art in their own corporate premises.

Mapping for the first time the increasingly hegemonic position that corporations and corporate elites have come to occupy in the cultural arena, this is a provocative contribution to the debate on public culture in Britain and America.

Complex and raises some interesting issues...

By approaching her subject systematically through the use of social scientific methods, as well as through the lens of critical theorists such as Pierre Bourdieu, the author touches on some very pressing issues in the world of contemporary art. Rather than simply approaching her topic in the context of art history, the author (importantly) utilizes a cultural studies approach couching her analysis of the visual art world within a broader socio-economic context. She does not take private patronage of the arts as a natural given, but rather critically examines the shift from the individual collector of fine art to corporate sponsorship of the arts as composed of such individuals. Further, the author critically explores the interrelationships of economically powerful corporations to public governmental funding agencies, and how each is imbricated in the larger discourses of art and the public sphere, the relationships of power to the production of knowledge, and the political economy of the contemporary art world as it emerged through the neo-liberal economic policies of the Thatcher and Regan governments.

While her use of case studies and 'hard' data adds credence to the text, it is the authors critical voice that is most compelling. This is a very insightful book for all stakeholders in the world of contemporary art who are interested in interrogating the complex relationship between art and commerce, and its implications for the public sphere. While it is true that today the arts must depend on both private and public funding in order to survive, it remains important to to understand HOW the arts are funded (and in relation to systems of power).

Note: To approach the text with the reductive and simplistic belief that private funding for the arts is a "fact of life" will have been to completely miss the point and the book will be less useful.

I felt like it was an effective book for teaching about speed tweaks- it's fast and easy to read, and it's well organized

This is a good web book. The author has a lot of skill- you don't run a large collegiate site without a lot of organizational skill as well as technical prowess because those sites can be demanding in ways most people would not dream because the sites can be hundreds of thousands of pages. I warmed up to the book immediately when I saw the author's credentials. That's the type of position that requires a lot of 'people skill' which she clearly has, frequent teaching, and that shows, because this book is very easy to understand. It's quite organized, and it really hits all the important areas of front end speed tweaking.
First, she lays out the case for why websites should be fast, something that is so important to professional sites, but speed tweaking a site is often a way of thinking that adds a bit of work and thought into every other task that a webmaster does daily. I think she gets that point across well too. After explaining what it is, and the effects bad speed planning can have on customer abandonment rates, she breaks down common tasks as sections of the book, and then expands on ways that a webmaster can pay attention to and improve speed.
It doesn't always SEEM like a very technical book with tons of code, but there is a companion site that offers more examples. I think the book is actually better for this- I think it is much more useful that the site is a quick, easy read that hits the high points and makes a webmaster think- so much of what goes into designing for speed is simply understanding ways that it can be thought about and well, knowing it is important, and well, a clue. The book's ideal reader will already have a good grasp of HTML, CSS and javascript. Backend tweaks are discussed a bit, but those really are not the focus of this book.

Not Just Coding But Making the Case for Lean Design

The discussions of testing/performance-monitoring tools including HTTP Archive, WebPageTest, and Boomerang are not enough to make anyone an expert (or even proficient) but enough to expose you to their basic capabilities and steer you in the direction of deeper knowledge.
The large number of footnote links is a real strength of the book: well-chosen, appearing at appropriate points in the text, and easy to read.

The code for the book is easy to grab from github and there’s an assumed level of expertise as far as basic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as maintaining web pages and accessing the developer tools inside various browsers.

But it’s not necessary to be a JavaScript or HTML guru to get important lessons from this book. In fact, the most important ideas are not coding idioms and tricks, it’s understanding how website performance is influenced by content, how to sell this to your local group and the broader organization, how to manage and manipulate content to improve performance, and what tools and techniques are available to help you in this effort.

I found it eye-opening to shift my perceptions a bit and view websites in terms of Measurable Performance Modules (MPMs) and average number of requests (queries) versus average size of ‘payload returned’.

The early chapter on perceived performance is very well done, taking into account the psychological aspects of user-responses in the ever-faster, ever-more-impatience world everyone’s site is operating in – like it or not.

Rather than hard core developers, I’m tempted to say the ideal audience here is senior tech leads and group managers who need to understand the technical ins-and-outs mostly in order to explain and sell them to higher, non-technical folks.

If there’s a negative, the overall production value of the book and the graphics in particular are often too small to enjoy without a magnifier in hand(!). But the writing is very clean and informative, with a minimum of jargon, and that more than compensates for the ‘lo-fi’ production vibe.

Finally, there’s an irony and a lesson in relative perception here for anyone old enough to recall how slow early websites were. I can well remember watching images take forever to load compared to desktop and local client/server applications and thinking to myself, “This web stuff is a sham. No one will ever accept this step backwards in performance”. Yeah, no one.

short book doesn't go far enough and why is there no index?

I'm not impressed by this book. Who writes a reference book these days with no index? Granted, the book is fairly short, but an index still helps readers find specific material in the book. There are so many different concepts in website development these days that reference book really need to help readers find the material that the need.

Regarding the material that is in this book, it focuses almost entirely on front-end development for PC web browsers. There is only one short chapter on optimizing for mobile web browsers, which is an area that is quickly growing in importance. There is only one superficial chapter on server-side optimizations. I think some material on database and application server setup would be very valuable to many readers, though perhaps too complicated to others. The most useful material in this book are the chapters on optimizing your CSS and HTTP, which is important to know.

The Descriptio was the first authorized account of the Order’s activities to appear in printed form, and it became one of the best sellers of the 15th century. The publication of the Descriptio not only fed Western Europe’s hunger for news about an important Christian victory in the ongoing war with the Turks, it also served to shape public perceptions of the Hospitallers. Caoursin wrote in a humanistic style, sacrificing military terminology to appeal to an educated audience; within a few years, however, his Latin text became the basis for vernacular versions, which also circulated widely. Modern historians recognize the contributions that the Ottoman siege of Rhodes in 1480 made in the development of military technology, particularly the science of fortifications. This book is the first complete modern Latin edition with an English translation of the Descriptio obsidionis Rhodiae. Two other published eyewitness accounts, Pierre D’Aubusson’s Relatio obsidionis Rhodie and Jacomo Curte’s De urbis Rhodiae obsidione a. 1480 a Turcis tentata, also appear in modern Latin edition and English translation. This book also includes John Kay’s Description of the Siege of Rhodes and an English translation of Ademar Dupuis’ Le si�ge de Rhodes. The lengthy introductory chapters by Theresa Vann place the Ottoman siege of Rhodes in 1480 within the context of Mehmed II’s expansion in the Eastern Mediterranean after he captured Constantinople in 1453. They then examine the development of an official message, or propaganda, as an essential tool for the Hospitallers to raise money in Europe to defend Rhodes, a process that is traced through the chancery’s official communications describing the aftermath of Constantinople and the Ottoman

I liked this book. People who are interested in John Abercrombie should be interested in reading this book... One of the things that was especially interesting is the author's writing style and ability to get his message across. Overall, this book was very well written and I highly recommend to those who have not read. To those who have read it - read it again!

It works as a dinosaur reference, but if you are looking for something a little more in depth, you might consider looking elsewhere. Perhaps you might consider Robert T. Bakker's Dinosaur Heresies or Dinosaur Odyssey. The weren't as many colored pictures as I would have liked, but those that were in the book more than made up for this deficiency. All in all, this is a pretty solid book on those amazing creatures called dinosaurs.

This book was exactly what I was searching for!

This is a perfect first book for learning about dinosaur breeds, what period they're from, how to pronounce their names and what they mean, their statistics, and their discovery history. It gives an easy and organized visual to help break all these things down so it's not a boring read. I'd suggest it for most people who love learning about these creatures and wanting to extend their knowledge in dinosaurs. I would not suggest it however if you have started a dinosaur library and are already pretty knowledgeable in them. It's definitely a beginner's guide - comparable to a 101 college class let's say. I attached an example of a page about a dinosaur to see the layout (my favorite dinosaur too!).

Great sweeping overview of known dinosaus

Excellent volume, including many species only announced in the last two years. Great reference for the many species that have been discovered. While not all known dinosaus are included, nor could they realistically fit in one volume, those missing have close relatives feature and this facilitates comprehension of the families and types of the vast range of dinosaurs.
