Entertaining and Enjoyable, for Deep Purple fans new and old.

Being the world's biggest Deep Purple fan as I am, I thought I knew everything about them. How wrong I was proven when I read this book; A Matter of Fact, by Jerry Bloom, a newly published Deep Purple book about facts & fun trivia of the group spanning their entire career.
What an entertaining read with loads of great never before seen information & pictures, also includes a nice list near the end of some of Deep Purple's rarest albums and LPs.

This book is a MUST HAVE for any Deep Purple fan or collector, and it even separates the fact from fiction.
It's not all Just about MK 2 & Ritchie Blackmore. Jerry Bloom is open to writing about all of the different line ups of the band & even features a hefty couple of chapters on Deep Purple MK 5 with Joe Lynn Turner to the current line up, MK 8 with Steve Morse & Don Airey who still tour today and the book has information from up to the most modern point in time the present. It even puts you in the place of the band's unfortunate turmoil and problems with Blackmore from the 80's and 90s with other stories from people like the band's manager, Colin Heart who also witnessed some of the tragic events unfold first hand causing the original line up to split in '93. It feels like you are there really.

There are illustrations on almost every page of this text, some diagrams, some photos, and many charts. Some of the info and pictures in this book is disturbing, but it made me think. After I completed reading this book, I took it to the department and made numerous photocopies of some charts and diagram inside of the book, and now carry them on-duty with me during every shift. An example: one way that I use to determine if a suspect is lying to me is to ask him his social security number. The first three numbers of a persons social security number ca be easily tracked to only one state within the USA. For example, if he says 526-__-____, I look at one chart within this book. The chart says that 526 is from Arizona, so if he says that he has never been to Arizona, and is from Wisconsin, he is probably lying. The information in this book will really help you on the road, like it has helped me. It already has probably kept numerous officers alive...

This is simply the best police text in print. You will not learn the information in this book in the academy (for the most part). Reading and careful study of this book will increase your knowledge of the methods that seasoned officers use to catch the bad guys. If you are a veteran police officer this book still has a lot to offer. I highly recommend.

Great first impression, but...

When I first saw this book and began reading it, I was very impressed. There's lots of useful information even for a keen garlic grower over 30 years. The book is physically beautiful with a sewn binding so it oozes quality. Unfortunately, the book is marred by appalling editing. Through is spelt "though", than is spelt "that" etc. Worse, when trying to locate a seller of unusual garlic seed in my neck of the woods, Ms Woodward gives email an address that lacks the .com, .net, .org and a website that just displays a picture.

Given the poor editing, some doubt must be cast on the veracity of the information contained in this book.

About the Author

Marko Kloos was born and raised in Germany, in and around the city of Münster. In the past, he has been a soldier, bookseller, freight dockworker, and corporate IT administrator before he decided that he wasn’t cut out for anything other than making stuff up for a living.

Marko writes primarily science fiction and fantasy, his first genre love ever since his youth, when he spent his allowance mostly on SF pulp serials. Just a brilliant series. Impossible to put down.

In the fifth of the "Frontlines" series, Lt. Grayson and his wife learn they are going to be heading to Mars with a counterattack against the Lanky invasion, hopefully to rescuer the remaining colonists who were overrun, but are surviving in isolated shelters. Will the tides of battle be turned? Will the earth forces be able to take out the dozen or so seed ships protecting Lanky forces on the ground? If they can't, the counterattack will fail before it's even begun. Kloos has woven a realistic and gripping story of our battle for survival against a species that has every physical advantage over us. Mankind has to find a way to counter the advantages the Lankies have, or become extinct. In this book, there is non-stop action throughout, but if I reveal much more, I will be giving away a lot of the story. If you like realistic SciFi, this is the series for you.

Best yet in a great series!

I thought quite highly of Marko Kloos "Frontlines" series, calling it the best of ground-based mil sci-fi. Somehow, the fifth book in the series raised the bar even further!. It's Earth against the Lankies in Greenland and on Mars, so for setting alone it is worth reading. But it is not a homogenous "Terran" force but one made up of Americans like Lt. Grayson and his wife Halley and also Russians and a variety of Europeans; Chinese are fighting the Lankies, too, but out of our sight. Their equipment is advanced but understandable, and Mr. Kloos stays very true to the limitations of the soldiers' arms and armor.

The gigantic Lankies are some of the best and most "alien" foes in the genre. We never truly understand them, though the range of their capabilities become a bit more evident in this book. They have taken Mars, trapping our settlers in a number of large bunkers while the Lanky version of terraforming is done. Clearly, a Lanky presence there cannot be allowed to remain, so the stakes are never in doubt. The drop ships and SI troopers are needed, but the task is one that may be too much.

Finally, the writing is first rate and some of it, particularly at home in Liberty Falls, rises above the genre. A pleasure to read!

and Kloos gets better at every milepost

The fifth installation delivers. I've reviewed every entry into this series, and Kloos gets better at every milepost. This series ihas been largely plot driven, and feels fresh for a pew-pew military SF series. In this entry, Kloos shows his character chops as for the first time time I'm flipping through pages sweating about who is going to make it.

Fields of Fire is the campaign to retake Mars, and I would have been happy with a routine "turning of the tide" novel, which I fully expected. But he even manages to shake that up a bit and take it in a direction I didn't expect. Well played.

When I reviewed "Terms of Enlistment" I advised that you should scoop it up before he wasn't selling novels at Indy prices any more. Here's my advice now - scoop up the series before his numbers dictate new novels at 15 bucks.
