Good for Beginners armed with MPC and no formal music training

As an inspiring musician armed with a DAW and no formal music experience, this book does its job of teaching basic rhythms quite well. I have an MPC studio, so translating these patterns into my DAW was extremely simple, but time consuming. Got the book translated into my DAW in ~8 hours. I try to just tap along with the rhythms for at least an hour a day to make myself memorize the patterns. Quite good for finger training on the MPC, Maschine, MIDI Pad, and any drum machine. This book should be used as a guide, remember there are no borders to your art!

But this kit is so good, was such a hit with my 9 year-old daughter (and me--tons of fun to do together), that I felt compelled to sing its praises. The kit contains pretty beads, a clear, well-written instructional booklet with bright, beautiful, inspiring pictures, and a sturdy loom. My daughter needs a little help stringing the loom and finishing the bracelets, but that hasn't stopped her from making a bracelet a day since Christmas...This is a well-priced, well designed product.

In this latest effort to popularize the sciences, City University of New York professor and media star Kaku (Hyperspace) ponders topics that many people regard as impossible, ranging from psychokinesis and telepathy to time travel and teleportation. If only Jules Verne could read this book.

Michio Kaku's Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, force Fields, Teleportation, and time Travel is just the right book at the right time. In fact, Michio Kaku's sytle reminds me just a bit like Carl Sagan in that he tries to make scientifically difficult topic easy to understand. Kaku's mission here is to spread knowledge and that he does very well.

There are other books similar to Physics of the Impossible. Some have been mentioned by other reviewers. I'd like to mention The Science of Star Wars by Jeanne Cavelus and The Physics of Star Trek by Lawrence M. Krauss and Stephen Hawking. Like Physics of the Impossible, both of these works attempt to apply hard scientific facts-of-life to popular ideas in modern fiction. What Kaku does is to organize his ideas into classes of impossibility and here lies an important element of this book.

Michio Kaku is a born communicator which is why he is so often seen on television and why his books are so popular. He is at his best, in my opinion, in Physics of the Impossible. Well written by an author that knows his material and wants to communicate his ideas, the book is sure to please and inform and stimulate the imagination.

I highly recommend Physics of the Impossible.

A fun, mind-bending journey!

This is probably Dr. Kaku's best popular work since Hyperspace or Visions. Here is a wide range of scientific possibilities to be explored. Dr. Kaku's gift is to make modern physics comprehensible to those of us without a mathematical background. In this book he uses his gift to explain how the standard model and string field theory (which he is coauthor of) can be applied to contemplation of some of our most wildest scifi dreams. The chapters are short and easily read in short sittings, which lends well to a book that stretches the imagination so dramaticaly. Dr. Kaku is also careful to remain objective in discussing different theoretical approaches which is an admirable feat given some of the topics ventured into in this book. If you enjoy cutting edge science, it doesn't get more cutting edge then this. Thank you Dr. Kaku for yet another wonderful journey.

Making Science accessible to the masses

I've been a big fan of Dr. Kaku since I first saw him on The Science Channel years ago, but this is the first book of his I've read.

In "The Physics of the Impossible," Michio Kaku explores the very subjects that fuels the imagination of those who love science fiction because of the possibilities it raises. Is Time Travel possible? What about Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Light Sabers? Could one really build a Death Star?

One of the great things about Dr. Kaku's approach is that he does not talk down to the lay person, but he writes just as he speaks, with a simple eloquence that makes these complex concepts accessible to the non-Physicist mind. And it is always clear just how much passion Dr. Kaku has for his work, and he easily passes that on to his audience through his words.

Another great thing about this book is that it's not only an education on the concepts of such things as String Theory and so much more, it's also an exploration of the history behind moderm Physics, dating back to the days of Isaac Newton and beyond. I learned so much about the triumphs, and even more surprising, the tragedies befalling many of the pioneers of modern science merely because they were people with concepts far ahead of their times.

I have to say that if you are a young physicist in the making, an older person who is simply fascinated in the subject of Science, a Science Fiction writer looking for deeper understanding of these subjects to inspire you in your writing, or just someone wanting to get better insight into the mysteries behind the nature of the universe, then this is definitely the book for you.

An in-depth study of the most important Thai politician

Pasuk and Baker, the famous husband and wife team, have produced a very useful book about former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin. They cut through all of the bias and hyperbole and provide a fair, if sometimes harsh, assessment of the man and his government. The book features much investigative journalism into Thaksin's business relationships and allegations of corruption. This is essential reading if you want to understand modern Thai politics.

Best yet found about what's going on in Thailand

Today I finished the book about Thaksin which in 2009 was brought up to date. Last year I got information that a second edition was on the way I was put on the waiting list. I live in Thailand and owe historical books about Thailand and becaurse all of the political problems there have been since the generals in 2006 removed Thaksin I was looking after books about Thaksin that first finished after 2006, but could only find this one.

I startet reading history when I was 7 years old, and now I am 63, and still, among other things, read historie, often thinking of the quotation by George Santayana: "Thouse that don't remember history are bound to relive through it again!", which is written in the start in Simon Wiesenthals book about Christofer Columbus.

This book about Thaksin is very detailed with informations and dates about nearly all that has happened while Thaksin has been i politic, bouth before and after Thaksin was removed. I can not learn the thailand language, and I have lived here for 7 1/2 year and thereby have had to aske my wife about what's going on in the thailand news on Tv. But after having finished this book I can se that what my vife have told, and what I by myself have concluded by news in Tv, fits perfect to what's written in the book.

For me reading the last half of the book was nearly as reading a criminal novel so I cold not stop.

And by reading this book I can se that the case concerning Thaksin is much in parallel with a case we had i Denmark 30 and a few years ago. At that time we had a lawyer, Glistrup, that had finished with one of the best characters ever and he had newer payed a Krone in tax because he realy understood to use the law. He started a party, that are still existing, but was at last put in jail for some years for not paying tax, even though I don't think he did something wrong. Just to stake it, I've newer wouted on his party. But for Thaksin it has been the same as other person with much money, but then when peopel that didn't like him, by fore, had got the gowernment he was put guilty.

But concerning Thaksin and his parties, it's grotesque to read about how the generals changed the laws and besides gave the judges of the supreme court more power. And after that how the judges declared the goverment party as being illegal, and not allowed 109 MPs for being allowed to be wouted into the parlament again in the next 5 years. And this, and much, more at the same weeks as the generals party, the yellow, was allowed to occupy the airports and parlament buildings, without judge or generals did anything. And laiter there were no charge against any persons that had had to do with the occupation of the airports, which involved 350.000 passengers, and with bombs, and for which one bank calculatet the cost the state to be 190 billion Bath, around 6 billion $, 3 % of the BNP.

And as written on side 343, after the judges, the yellow and the generals in december 2008 again by force had got their president to lead the contry, "The 2008 transition was d'eja vu all over again".

Before finishing the book, I in last week ordered a book more about Thailand, the one that first has come in print this year, that is Federico Ferrara: "Thailand Unhinged". For getting more telling about what's going on in the background. I owe 290 books about economic and politicks, and was studing economic i Copenhagen University, until I in 2002 left Denmark.

The actual book about Thaksin is only about politic historic, so it's not with difficult micro or macro economic even though one of the writers are professor in economic. It's an extreemly good book telling only the truth about what has happened, that is neither beeing on the yellow or the red side.

Chapter One

Growing Up Tipsy

Somehow I knew that there was much more going on than was apparent on the surface. My existence and that of the things going on around me caused me to question everything, always looking for the deeper meanings.

I was born in the city of the Voudoun--New Orleans, Louisiana. My paternal grandmother's shotgun house stands at 1018 St. Ann Street. The Maison Blanche, the former home of Mam'-zelle Marie La Veau, the voudou priestess for three generations, is recorded as being 1022 St. Ann Street. To this day my grandmother's house carries a sign that reads, "The Marie La Veau Apartments."

New Orleans-like the San Francisco Bay Area, where I now live-is a psychic seaport. The psychic energies of many people living and dead hovers over the city of New Orleans, possibly because of the water. Visitors to the city become "tipsy" after being there only a short time. "Tipsy" is the name given to that state of mind that precedes possession. (It is also used to mean slightly drunk.) I grew up tipsy.

I spent many days and nights in the dark, mysterious house of my grandmother, Maw-Maw Catherine Mason Allen, while my mother and father were at work.

Due to the limited perceptions of a child and the nature of memory, I can only describe it vaguely. I remember a big, toosoft, and bulky double bed in the middle room. This is the place where my cousin Frank Jr., took refuge from the whippings he seems always to have earned. He used to hide under this bed to smoke cigarettes; but for me smoke and Frank were not the only things hiding under that bed.

Perhaps I had eaten too many pickles that night and overindulged in the delicious teacakes and sweet potato turnovers my Maw-Maw used to bake in the woodstove. Whatever the external cause, when I laid my head on the duck-down pillow covered with an immaculate muslin pillowcase, I just couldn't sleep. Everything was so still and quiet that I could not tell whether the numerous and barely distinguishable adult relatives of mine were asleep in the front room or out for a night of church. I could have been there alone without concern because everybody on the block was somehow kin to me and would have come running at the slightest disturbance.

But tonight as Wind slipped slowly through the cracks in the wooden fence that enclosed the backyard, no one seemed to be afoot. At least, no one human. I could hear only the wind and the irregular tapping of Maw-Maw's white dog, who was born with only three legs. I was always afraid of that dog and kept a safe distance between us, not because he was in any ways vicious but because his eyes were always red and I had been told that he knew when somebody was going to die.

I lay there listening to his tapdance against the wind and stared at the ceiling thoughtlessly. After a period of time that I cannot judge, a feeling of apprehension began to creep over me. Somebody or something was moving snakelike and slowly under the bed.

Was it Frank? Had he crawled under it to avoid a whipping and fallen asleep? Had Maw-Maw's creepy dog gotten under the house and situated himself directly beneath the bed? When I asked myself these questions, Wind told me, "No, Cher." As my fear mounted, I became aware of a sensation of lifting subtly. My back seemed not to touch the buttons of the mattress. I kept rising and rising until I seemed to be five feet above the bed. I remember thinking that if I kept rising like this I was going to bump into the ceiling and smash my already flat nose. "I wanna go down," I said nervously inside my head, and at that moment my face seemed to sink through the back of my head so that my chest and feet were still facing the ceiling but my face was looking down at the bed. And what a sight it saw!

There under the bed was an undulating, sinewy, mass of matter as brown as the waters of the muddy Mississippi River. It was squeezing out from under the bed on all sides like a toothpaste tube with pin holes in it. The brown was taking forms, humanoid but undistinguishable by gender. They were getting higher, showing heads with eyes, bellies, legs, outstretched arms, and I was getting closer to the bed. My face, now only a few inches from the sheet returned to the other side of my head, and as my body descended I looked at these brown humanoids towering over me. I seemed to shake uncontrollably, my muscles moved about as if I had no bones. I opened my mouth, screamed but the sound was made only inside my head. The brown-folk seemed to take a deep breath as my body settled on the mattress. They touched me and their matter slipped into my muscles and ran through my veins. The floodgates opened and as a warm astringent liquid sank into the mattress, I sank into sleep.

I remember telling my mother about this dream. She laughed, stroked my head and asked me if I recognized any of the people who had come from under the bed. I told her, "No, Ma'am," and the matter was forgotten.

This happened when I was about five years old. Twenty-three years later I got a piece of an explanation of its meaning. A Puerto Rican woman water-gazed for me, and-without knowing my story--told me to make two dolls for my unknown ancestors and keep them under my bed.

Across the street from Maw-Maw's house was a classic French Quarter home complete with veranda and cast-iron lattice work. I used to sit on the steps of my grandmother's house and stare at the balcony. There was a little girl, brown-skinned . . .

A very good book on practical American voudou.

As a Northern black kid raised by Southern black parents, I recommend this book to people raised like me. It answers about as many questions as it raises.

Being of a Western mindset, I eventually gave up ever trying to find some way to make voudou more accessable to me. I may be African-American, but I'm neither African nor Cuban. Teish's book is primarily about the voudou of New Orleans, which is mixed with Catholicism, Amerind and Western pagan traditions. I think I've found in-road.

Want the story on the woman responsible for modern American Voudou, Man'zelle Marie LaVeau? On the voudou-Catholic connection? On how the Seven African Powers relate to the saints, the planets and the elements? On what is meant by "the devil is beating his wife?" Want to get scared out of making a spirit doll for yourself? How about getting guided away from hexing as a way of life?

This ... is a good book. If you've gotten frustrated when trying to learn about voudou, this is a great place to start.

For everyone who wants to learn the truth about Voodoo.

I loved the fact that Teish put this book in the context of returning home and telling her personal story of coming to Voodoo. As a black woman who is drawn to many Pagan paths but especially looking for something that reflects my ancestry, this book really reverberated with me. Teish includes everything from the beginnings of Voodoo in W. African and its development in America, to altars for specific Gods, humorous anecdotes, spells for many purposes, etc. etc. etc. A much-overlooked but much-needed addition to any Pagan library.

So many books on Spirit set off my bog-o-meter, but this is not one of them. Teish is a fabulous teacher, story-teller, and leader. I refer to my copy of _Jambalaya_ so often, I've really got to get a new copy.
A beautiful book about a beautiful spiritual path.
