Not worth the Time and the Money

I am a student who happens to have read both John Hull's 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' and his 'Fundamentals'. To say that 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' is a good book is a great understatement, and can even be considered an insult. Yet, this book, which is targeted at readers who are not as acquainted with derivatives fails to impress. Through out the book you can feel how John Hull struggles to explain things in a simple manner. Sadly, his efforts have failed, and this is most evident when my fellow classmates had a hard time understanding the materials starting from Swaps. When we reached the section on options pricing, the book lacks the rigorous math that is needed for students to fully appreciate the beauty of deriving things like Black-Scholes. Overall, if you are a beginner, go straight to 'Options, Futures, and Derivatives'. This book is not worth wasting time over.

Ripoff + Worthless

Long story short, this book is a ripoff and won't help you much on learning about futures markets and options. As a 4th year finance student, I can without any doubt say my learning experience has never been this miserable! Here's a summary of what it's like:

1. Language: Wording is terrible. Definitions are wordy, hard to understand in general, and you will encounter typos quite often.
2. Practice questions: To see answers for the practice problems at the end of each chapter, you have to purchase a separate book that costs over $40 and answers for "further questions" are not even given unless you register yourself as an instructor on the Pearson website.
3. In some questions, data don't match (e.g. in one of the questions he requires us to find a margin requirement in Oct 2010, while the data he gives ranges from 2013 to 2015 - wake up Mr. Hull! smh..) as if the author didn't give a crap about "his students".

I spent 4 months with this book for I was required to read it for class, but I can surely say it is a book that gradually annoys its readers as time proceeds. Please persuade your instructor not to use this book if you are enrolled in a class dealing with this matter. I am serious.

why are we still playing these games in 2007?

By games I mean the fact that the answers to about a third of the questions are found in a solutions manual that, last time I looked (in early Sept '07), was unavailable for purchase. The answers to another third of the questions are not to be found anywhere. The answers to the last third of the questions are in the book--but these questions are not very interesting or challenging. Why must we play this game? Why not just put all the answers in the back of the book? (I know, I know: it's all about the money, etc. But still . . .)

As for the content of the book, I'm told that this isn't Hull's authoritative book (that would be 'Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives'). I feel like a sucker for having bought it. Is it good to make your customer's feel like suckers, Mr. Hull?

The Romanian Language

Well produced lessons, but unnerving (overwritten?) CDs.

Romanian is the "fifth Romance language," 70% Latin, so they say, but influenced also by the many cultures (Greek, Turkish, Hungarian, Russian, Ukrainian, etc.) that have interacted deeply in Romanian life over the past two millenia. I lived in Romania for nine months in 2008-2009, but sadly learned very little of the tongue, even though I'd bought a book and been given another, and had done some study of both.

Recently, offered an opportunity to return to teach in Romania in the fall of 2010, I ordered the Pimsler course in Conversational Romanian from Amazon. It arrived, and at my first opportunity I put the CD labeled, "Disc 1, Users Guide and Lassons 1 & 2, Conversational Romanain" into my laptop, and up popped the I-Tunes menu screen. There I read, "Unit 01, 27:23, Pimsler, Hungarian." Rattled, but persistent, I clicked on the track, and the first Romanian lesson, as on the label, began. I have since found that Lesson 3 is labeled as "07... Hungarian."

Faulty editng of the CDs' menus aside, I am but two lessons into this package, and already I can attest to the excellent quality of this instructional program. I am learning to hear, to comprehend, and to speak Romanian. The program is easy to use and fun to do. The native speakers and the narrator have marvelous diction and clear voices.

I promise to update this review when I have completed the 16th and final lesson.

Update No. 1: Now on Lesson 7, I find it as "07 Croation" in the menu. It is in fact the seventh lesson of Romanian. I am still well pleased with the quality of instruction.

About the Author

Manfred te Grotenhuis (PhD, Sociology, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands) is an associate professor of quantitative data analysis at Radboud University Nijmegen and an affiliate of the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS). He does research and teaching in inferential statistics, age-period-cohort models, multilevel modeling, event history analysis, and SPSS syntax. Grotenhuis has published extensively in a wide variety of journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Demography, and the International Journal of Epidemiology. He has been teaching statistics to students at Radboud University Nijmegen since 1995 and has written several introductory books on SPSS and statistics. Grotenhuis is the recipient of his university's biennial teaching award.

Anneke Matthijssen (MSc in Educational Sciences, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands) first had a career as a medical analyst. During her study and after graduating from the Radboud University, she was involved in teaching statistics. Since 2008 she has been working as a policy�adviser/institutional researcher�in�the�Strategy and Development�Department�at�Radboud University. In this position, Matthijssen provides the board and faculties with management information on education and research. She is also chairwoman of the Dutch Association for Institutional Researchers in which policy advisers of all Dutch universities are organized.�

Basic and straightforward intro to SPSS.

Very basic introduction to SPSS. The title is incredibly accurate. Very straight forward book that is easy to understand. It provides a very basic step-by-step guide to SPSS. Great for a beginner or for teaching an introductory methods course. It also has uses in an online environment or 50-50 split course. It would also serve a purpose for a grad student teaching the lab section of a stats course. Overall, it has uses in an introductory sense.

Swoon. Sorry, slight spoiler alert if you haven't read the first book.

This is my very favorite type of story, where the two people start out in conflict and have to work though it - because it means I get to fall in love right along with them. It surprised me that I so easily switched my loyalty from the first book, because I usually resent that kind of thing.

Strong characters, great story and character development - even though it deals with magic, I never had any "give me a break" moments, the characters stay true to character. Read this whole series, and anything else the author writes. I'm a HUGE fan.

Rachel Morgan has an amazing talent of painting vivid scenarios and not only capturing emotions well, but realistically writing them into a story that encompasses a person's ability to relate and personal experiences. In this story there is no self-gratification, but rewards for hard work and an unrelenting drive to succeed. There's no facade of inhumane strength, but compassion and an involvement with what one might consider flawed. And it's all written into a fantastic fantasy realm filled with endless adventures. Every beautifully painted scene of the Faerie realm can be found in this series. The graphics are not only easily visualized, but simple, leaving room to focus on the action at hand. No matter how many times I've read the Faerie Prince I am always left in a state of awe. It is my favorite in this series. One of my all time favorites period. The direction the author takes with Ryn and Vi's friendship leaves me down right giddy. I am hopelessly addicted to the Creepy Hollow series.

This is only a review pertaining to the kindle version. Unlike the printed version where every quote appears on a lovely image, the kindle version is text only. There is a line of text on every page. Not at all worth the $5.99 I paid for it on amazon.com.

Inspirational!!

This book is filled with quotes and sayings, all inspirational, all meaningful.
This morning I felt angry at myself for not doing something as well as I'd expected. I opened the book and one of the first quotes I saw was, "Release the need to blame anyone, including yourself. We're all doing our best with the understanding, knowledge, and awareness we have." -Louise L. Hay
This moved me, how well it fit me at that moment. I took to the quote and forgave myself, realizing that it is useless to try to be perfect.
I recommend this book to anyone who gets inspired by quotes. If you are one of those people that needs to read a story to be inspired, this is not a book for you. But if you like to open a book anywhere and read a quote and be inspired, buy this book right now.

I think there is a lot of useful information in this book, especially for the price. One thing to be cautious about is that it seems to have a left/liberal slant to it. Ironically, the mind control book may have a mind control agenda in itself. I am politically un affiliated and was a straight ticket democrat before that, so my warning is not because I have an issue with the party.

If you read this critically you will notice the author uses two main types of examples for mind control, mind control in the context of cults and mind control against the liberal agenda. Read everything critically, even a book that is giving you advice on avoiding mind control.
