Th Human Brain Versus the NHL

This is a book that should be stocked not only by every bookstore that puts hockey books on its shelves but by any sporting goods store that sells hockey equipment. I wish the author had plugged away at finding a major publisher because this book deserves one. It's both exceptionally well written and exceptionally timely.

The book quotes the great center for the Montreal Canadiens Jean Beliveau: "You can play this game perfectly and never intentionally hurt anybody." Therein lies the deterioration of hockey civility, irrespective of today's higher calibre of play. Today's NHL features all kinds of players whose raison d'etre is to hurt opposing players so badly that they'll not only be out of the game, they'll be out like a light and even out for the rest of the season. And sometimes it's a Sid Crosby or a Wayne Gretsky lying on the ce. That mentality was foreign to the old NHL. It did not glorify players whose only skills were fighting and brutal body checking. Now, as even former big bad Bruin turned hockey commentator Mike Milbury puts it, "There's six or seven players every shift now who don't care about the puck." In the 1960s, such a statement would be unintelligible. How could ANY hockey player not care about the puck? Sadly, it wouldn't surprise any fan today. Gowdey traces the evolution of this mentality and how an increasing incidence of concussions has accompanied it. He is not to be accused of wanting to convert the NHL to a gentler European style of play. He mostly just wants to reduce NHL barbarism to a bare minimum. The whole idea that the NHL should tolerate a much higher rate of brain injury than is inevitable is appalling. (Oh, sorry, it's just the brain. I thought we were talking about an important human organ.)

Gowdey makes clear that the problem is not illegal hits. The problem is mostly legal hits that should be illegal. Rule 48 was supposed to eliminate nasty head shots, but it can't work because it's couched in too many qualifiers. Skating lawyers, not referees, would be required to interpret and apply this rule effectively. Head shots should simply not be permitted--period, no qualifiers. And why not rehabilitate old rules that are seldom invoked anymore such as those penalizing charging or deliberate intent to injure?

The game is too fast and the players too big to avoid unacceptable rates of concussion under current rules. What is particularly horrible is that the vast majority of concussions happen without the drama of a player getting knocked out, which at least alerts everyone to the seriousness of what just took place. And the effects of minor concussions are cumulative. It's an insidious problem.

How can players with real hockey skills function at anywhere near their best when they know that they may very well be clobbered by the on-ice equivalent of a Brinks armored truck after they make a pass, even seconds later? So many bona fide hockey stars have had their seasons punctuated with injuries that were very much intended by goons or have had their careers thereby shortened. The excessive violence hurts and demeans the game as a spectacle. Apart from the pleasure of seeing an expansion team win the Stanley Cup mostly with sensational goaltending, who wants to revive the likes of Philadelphia's Broad Street bullies, as opposed to the likes of real hockey-playing teams such as the late 1970s Montreal Candiens?

Gowdey's arguments are more sophisticated and more charitable to Don Cherry types than what I've extracted above in broad strokes. And he embeds them within historical developments that many fans are probably not aware of. Most fans, unlike myself, continue to watch the game despite the barabarism. Count Gowdey amongst the optimists who continue to watch, partly in the hope of identifying what needs to be changed and then arguing passionately for such changes. Gowdey's passion for the game of hockey comes through loud and clear, and that's why even defenders of the status quo should listen up. Moreover: it's not a long book. It can easily be read over a weekend.

NHL....Wake Up!!!

The author takes a nostalgic look at hockey history and winds it through to the present. Along the way, he discusses the evolution of checking and why concussions have become so much more commonplace. The science of concussions is presented in an easy to understand way and the book doesn't get bogged down with medical jargon. The book is presented in such a way that the point is made, but not at the author's risk of coming across as a one who longs for the days of old. A super read for any hockey fan, athlete or parent.

This is a timely “must read” for all coaches, players, and parents whose kids aspire to play contact sports. Bravo, David.

About the Author
Soora Rasouli (Assistant Professor, Urban Planning Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands) has research interests in activity-based models of travel demand, uncertainty in complex systems, and methods of data collection. She is member of the editorial board of Journal of Urban Planning and Development, International of Transportation, Modern Traffic and Transportation Engineering Research, International Journal of Urban Science, and Journal of Traffic and Transportation Planning. She is junior career member of International Steering Committee for Travel Survey Conferences, and member of the Transportation Research Board Special Committee on Travel Forecasting Resources. Her work has been published in Environment and Planning A, Environment and Planning B, Networks and Spatial Economics, Transportation Research A, and the International Journal of Geographic Information Science. She has acted as guest editor for Environment and Planning B, Travel Behavior and Society, and Journal of Choice Modeling. She received several awards for her research.

Harry Timmermans holds a PhD degree in Geography/Urban and Regional Planning. He studied at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. His dissertation concerned a theory of the functional and spatial structure and the dynamics of central place systems. Since 1976 he is affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Nether�lands. First as an assistant professor of Quantitative and Urban Geography, later as an associate professor of Urban Planning Research. In 1986 he was appointed chaired professor of Urban Planning at the same institute. In 1992 he founded the European Institute of Retailing and Services Studies (EIRASS) in Eindhoven, the Netherlands (a sister institute of the Canadian Institute of Retailing and Services Studies). His main research interests concern the study of human judgement and choice processes, mathematical modelling of urban systems and spatial interaction and choice pattens and the development of decision support and expert systems for application in urban planning. He has published several books and many articles in journals in the fields of marketing, urban planning, architecture and urban design, geography, environmental psychology, transportation research, urban and regional economics, urban sociology, leisure sciences and computer science.

I could not put this important thriller-like book down. Hall takes you "Inside ISIS" with real heartbreaking stories of victims ISIS leaves in their wake and ISIS defectors who escaped with their lives. You are right there with Hall as he runs through enemy gun fire to bring first hand stories to the reader. After reading "Inside ISIS," I now have a full understanding of the perfect storm that allowed their evolution. A must read for everyone! Get to know our enemy.

An In Depth Look at a Very Real and Frightening Group of Murderers

There are a lot of books about ISIS out there right now, and it's hard to digest all of the information currently circulating in the news. This author has experience getting to the point as a columnist, so this book gets right to the meat and potatoes of the issue. It's so very sad to hear about the people who have willingly join this sect of savages thinking that it is a path to a meaningful life. It's not long before they realize that it's just a group of misguided murderers with loyalty to no-one but themselves. The stories of victims who escaped or survived, and their family members are harrowing. Hall did a great job of seeing this issue and the effects of this group from multiple perspectives.

To put yourself on the frontline and then write a book of this quality is a phenomenal feat. A terrifying situation that we are all too aware of, Benjamin Hall's bravery gives a clear, first hand insight to ISIS. A gripping, must read.

About the Author
Stephen J. Freeman is a professor of Counseling and Chair of the Department of Counselor Education at California State University, Sacramento. Dr. Freeman served on the graduate faculty at Texas Woman�s University for 18 years where he was the Coordinator of the Counseling and Development Program. He also maintained a private practice in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Dr Freeman has published on a variety of topics relating to death, grief, and loss and is the author of the book ETHICS: AN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE.

Great book!

This is a very simple book, quick to read and easy to understand. What I thought was great about it was that it explained grief in a way that was easily understood. Sometimes we can look at grief as a process that we need to go through in stages. This book helps us to understand that although grief is a process, it also flows in and out of the stages, sometimes going backward and forward. The best message it carries is that there are times, especially when we lose parents or spouses, that we just don't get through the process. Once we reach acceptance, we continue to miss the person and although the grief is much, much easier to deal with, we still have it with us in some cases...we just don't reach acceptance and then we're done. We are much more complex than that as human beings. I liked the way the author presented the subject and how easy it was to understand.

Professor Berk’s research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size-Related Anomalies,” was selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize.

He served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance, Director of the Western Finance Association, �Academic Director of the Financial Management Association, is a Fellow of the Financial Management Association, and is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance and current Vice President of the American Finance Association. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches MBA and Ph.D. courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley.

Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of contracts and securities, and the influence of information asymmetries on stock prices and corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

The Byrds – My Way (Volume 3) is a first-hand description of the inner workings of the Byrds and Burrito Brothers and other entertainment events: written by James ‘Jimmi’ Seiter (Road Manager, production manager and much more for many bands and events). It sets the record and previous assumptions straight as to what was really going on, from detailed personal, first-hand experience. He takes you on his journey which began in 1966; telling his version of events as he lived them in the form of 58 stories. It elaborates on the hard work that went on behind the scenes, to make the magic of music happen on stage in those days. The book series will recount the daily happenings of a few of America’s foremost Rock/Folk/Pop bands of the 1960’s & 1970’s as well as other production stories which the author was personally involved with along the way. This is Volume 3 there are many more to come so stay tuned and there is a website www.jimmiseiter.com which also has many historical photos.

This book is meant to be a series of 10 volumes. It begins with the Byrds, continues on to the Burrito Brothers (which was a spin off band from the Byrds) then back to the Byrds. It moves on to working with Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, David Cassidy, and back to the Burrito Bros. II. Then into the live recording & Studio recording industries with artists. The author’s path has also crossed with many other great artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, and John Denver, to name a few.

The main aim of this book is to report the facts as they happened, through the eyes of the author. After being interviewed (and misquoted) by numerous writers over the years, then reading their interpretation of events, it became clear that people could only report what they had been told, because they were not there. The writing is presented as fact and soon the general public takes it as such: but if one tries to justify some of the shows in the day to day accounts, it becomes obvious that the authors had access to old information or preliminary schedules, not what actually happened. The ‘facts’ are simply not accurate, but because it is written, fans believe it. So yes, bits and pieces of this story have been told, but not as this author knows it. This body of work has been written purely from memory, over a period of 20 years, directly from someone who lived it. It has been a long time coming because someone had to step up and say it out loud.

Jimmi Seiter, my way

These first 3 volumes are mislabelled--they are not so much about the Byrds as they are about Jimmi Seiter. The comments on the original Byrds are pretty much one-dimensional--Crosby is a loner and a troublemaker, Clarke is the only fun guy (but a bad drummer), Hillman is pretty much anonymous, and McGuinn is the villain. The real hero is Jimmi Seiter, a great-but-underappreciated road manager (his version) and a hit with the 'ladies', as he calls them. Maybe it's all true, but it does get a little tiresome when he pats himself on the back again and again. The narrative style ('my way', like Frank Sinatra?) needed a proper editor, not only for the multiple language errors, but also for the organization of the events in the text, which is very casual, to say the least.
Yet for all its faults, it's often a fascinating read, and a detailed record of the California music scene in the mid-to-late-60s. Seiter has a prodigious memory, judging from all the details he puts into his story, and while he occasionally goes overboard (esp. in the party scenes in Vol. 1), he provides a fascinating glimpse of the music and musicians, including the Byrds, which made such fine music in this period. Seiter also gives an insider's look into the roles of a road manager and what he has to do to make a road trip a success.
I hope future volumes give more attention to the Byrds themselves--as an insider, he should have much more to say about the individuals than he has so far.

AT TIMES ILLUMINATING, MOST OFTEN NOT SO

I'm guessing Jimmi Seiter never made it beyond 6th or 7th grade in school. It's plainly evident in his writing which screams for an editor's guiding hand. So much repetitive balderdash. No wonder no major publishing house touched these volumes. There's such a limited demographic for the information contained herein anyway. Jimmi should've never attempted to be roadie and road manager - too much work for one guy. But the problem with reading these volumes - there is so much meaningless dreck to wade through to find one little interesting tidbit. (I began with volume 3 and I'm nearly finished.) Jimmi is now an elderly man and in need of some retirement funds I imagine, so I don't begrudge him this opportunity and by buying volumes 3 thru 5 I've helped him a little. He busted his butt for the Byrds. I'm guessing all proposed 10 volumes could be condensed into one book. A How-To Manual for Innovation and Disruption

"Your company's chance of creating new wealth is directly proportional to the number of ideas it fosters and the number of experiments it starts. So ask yourself, "How diverse is your company's portfolio of unconventional strategy options?" Gary Hamel, a professor of Strategy who leads a strategy company, says, as quoted in this book.

Learning how to create disruptive products is taught by this author, Luke Williams, at NYU in their Stern graduate MBA program where he heads up their Entrepreneurship program. As my son graduated from Stern business school, if you had to pay for the course based upon this book, it would cost you about $10,000. We're still paying off the college loans. So, am delighted to get this information in an affordable book which is lively and readable.

The author isn't just a professor. This book combines not only theory, but practice. The author is a fellow at frog design company, has 30+ patents of his own. Frog design consults with organizations to create new, disruptive and innovative products. This book takes you through the process which frog design uses to help their clients. So, the process has been tested to see which dynamics achieve the best results. You will learn how to get feedback for your disruptive idea using Craigs List, and what questions to ask and when, for example.

There is a snarky adage that folks teach because they can't "do". Well, if you have experienced folks who "do", but can't teach, you know that is true, too. There are a talented few who can both do, teach and write, and it appears this author is in that subset.

Part One of this book coaches you in how to generate and refine three possible disruptive ideas. Part Two helps you test - through prototypes - and pitch them. The processes are simply explained in a step-by-step manner so you are able to develop the ideas, work with them, and then pitch them to other folks. A new section on "The Disruptive Leader" is also included.

Anyone who reads this book can come up with three possible disruptive ideas, refine them, learn how to prototype them, get feedback on them and pitch them. This book can function as a how-to manual on innovation. Applying the exercises in the book, I came up with ideas I hadn't considered before for possible products. One idea I found useful - there are many - is that you don't think just of the product, but consider it along with product, service and information. What would be the services and networked information needed to support that product?

A Harvard business professor says we have journeyed through the Agricultural, Industrial, Information Ages and are now in the Innovation Age. Companies have to innovate to survive. But what is the best process for innovation? It's beyond brain storming. Brain storming doesn't tell you what to do with the ideas once you, or your team, has generated them notes Williams. This book outlines the process. It would be invaluable to anyone working in an organization who hopes to keep their job and relevance.

I wish other business/tech writers would take advice from this author!

This is a great handbook for generating disruptive ideas and getting them to the market. The author does a great job of providing lots of helpful and practical advice in a relatively short amount of space. The use of headings, bullet points, pullouts, and diagrams keep the book flowing and interesting--but also make it much easier to use the book as a quick reference. Chapters end with useful step-by-step instructions for putting the chapter's information into practice. Chapter 5 even includes minute-by-minute instructions for creating a 9-minute/9-slide pitch. There's even a quick reference guide to summarize the processes discussed earlier in the book so you don't have to flip around for the important stuff you've already read and need right now. I wish other business/tech writers would follow this author's lead and write books that make it this easy for readers to learn what they need to know, get this kind of instruction on how to put that knowledge into practice, and have a means to quickly find the information they need when they come back to the book as a reference.

Good information, but frustrating typos and mistakes...

I was loving the chapter explanations, thoroughness, and style of this book, but discovered too many typos and mistakes before Chapter 3 to continue with it. I didn't have enough confidence in the accuracy of the material. Especially in a practice exam, the mistakes were very frustrating. If you choose to read and use it, the information is presented well, but be on the lookout for the mistakes and double-check the practice question answers and explanations. Don't just go by the "letter" of the correct answer.
